Tweet for the Vegan Movement!

Twitter has helped vegan products, and the vegan movement in general, make huge strides in mainstream  culture.

Twitter in and of itself is a simple concept that – love it or hate it – has changed communication. It may oversimplify things, but it also connects people who might otherwise not be connected: bands to artists, business owners to consumers and, of course, vegans to products and resources they might otherwise not have access to.

Let’s say a restaurant that has just put vegan options on their menu wants to find a quick and effective way to get the word out to a lot of people quickly and effectively. All they have to do is shout from the virtual rooftop that is Twitter about the addition, and every one of their followers will know about it within a matter of seconds. Their vegan followers will be excited, and their non-vegan followers will immediately think of their vegan friends.

So with a quick 140 characters, all of the restaurant’s followers know about the new menu options, and the restaurant has a wider and more frequent customer base. It’s a fine example of the way the cyber world can help build real communities.

Tweeting has also enriched the vegan culture by helping vegans find each other! Do a #vegan search right now, and you will find tweets from people all over the world writing about their passion for food without animal products. With that comes a sense of community, more recipes and more conversation outside of the 140-character parameters of Twitter.

The best way Tweeting has helped the vegan community is by normalizing the movement, taking the “weirdness” out of it, and allowing our community to explain less. It makes us more vocal, which makes others more aware, and helps business owners give thought to their vegan clientele (who were likely previously on the sidelines).

More vegan options to make life easier, and more revenue for businesses offering those vegan options – all thanks to technology based on the idea of text messaging? You can put that down as a #veganwin. Check out this link for ideas on how to use Twitter to help promote your vegan products, or your vegan business.
