Looking for a unique and meaningful way to spend Earth Day? If you are in the Berkeley, California area, why not check out the first Vegan Earth Day – and
help start a new tradition. Karine Brighten, founder of Karine Brighten Events, is organizing the event, which celebrates the link between veganism and environmentalism. Vegan Earth Day will be held on the UC-Berkeley campus April 22, 2011. Eating vegan is one of the best ways to make a profound, positive impact on the environment. The event will screen the award-winning documentary “Call of Life: Facing the Mass Extinction,” and a discussion panel will follow the film screening to discuss ways vegans can take their environmental commitment further.
Vegan Mainstream: What prompted you to begin this new tradition?
Karine Brighten: I am really passionate about veganism and the environment and I am always looking of ways to combine both. There are many events that take place on Earth Day, but none of them focus on the importance of adopting a vegan diet and reducing your carbon footprint.
VM: What numbers do you expect or hope attendance to reach?
KB: I am hoping to get 100-150 people at the event.
VM: Who is on the discussion panel and what do you expect the discussion to center around?
KB: David Ulansey, Lauren Ornelas, Alex Eaves, and Hope Bohanec are all on the panel discussion, and Rose Aguilar will be the panel moderator. The discussion will be centered around the film, the myths about “humane” meat, environmental racism, and lifestyle changes you can adopt.
VM: Do you see this event happening every year?
Karine: Yes! I do plan on continuing this event every year, and it will grow more every year. I already have plans for the next edition!
