Parents are, hands down, their children’s largest influence, especially when they are young. During the first handful of years, they are often their kids’ sole sources of information, and they lay the foundation and framework for the way their children will live their lives. As we have been discussing this week on the VM blog, mothers form early bonds with their children – and these bonds can be used to instill solid values and ideas from a young age.
Veganism is once again making the news. In April, a NYT article came out citing veganism as a “Choice with Definite Risks.” While the article was addressing raising vegan children, I believe that sentence adequately describes the diet for individuals of any age.
Whenever I think about karma I often think about the idea of non-violence, and specifically the belief that you should avoid harming any living creature.
I’m an animal lover myself, and I’m able to find something to adore or admire in most animals. I give spiders their space and, well, remember my post on snakes? Most vegans would consider themselves animal lovers, and avoid harming animals—if you did harm animals, that would sort of defeat the purpose, wouldn’t it?
While I love to cook, baking has never been my forte—even before I went vegan. But I have a major sweet tooth, so I have spent the last several years fooling around in my kitchen, elbows deep in dough and with the oven on high. There are many myths around vegan baking, and below I will dispel a few of the most common, along with the help of friend and former co-worker, the inspiring vegan cookbook author Hannah Kaminsky.
A few weeks ago the company I work for (outside of Vegan Mainstream) hired a new employee. Many of us already know that 2011 was a big year for vegan celebrities, from Oprah’s week-long vegan jaunt, to CSI and former Cheers star Ted Danson’s burst from the vegan closet. I know that it rubs some vegans the wrong way when celebrities come out with their decision to ditch meat and dairy; others [...]
This week we are focusing on vegan athletes here at Vegan Mainstream, which is exciting to me because I am currently training for my first Tough Mudder event. This 13-mile obstacle course was designed by the British Special Forces, and I have been in unofficial training mode for a few months now. With the April [...]
This week here at Vegan Mainstream we are showcasing some fantastic vegan events around the country. If you know where to look, there is no shortage of veg-centric celebrations and festivals, and their growing numbers caused me to wonder, what draws people to these events in the first place? Is it a passion for veganism? [...]
Even the scroogiest of us can admit that puppies are an easy way to pull a few heart-strings. Don’t believe me? Try taking a wiggly bottomed, prancing pup for a walk down the street and see how many people approach you for some lovin’. Cute as they may be, not nearly enough people think about [...]
I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. That being said, I’m a busy girl and am always on the lookout for kitchen gadgets that make my life easier—and delicious! The following are my top three cannot-live-without cooking accoutrements. A wok. I love asian flavors, and I cook absolutely everything savory in my wok, [...]
