Reacting Online to Alex Jamieson: If you can’t say something nice…

I had the strangest week, where it seemed like all my non-veg friends and acquaintances couldn’t wait to talk to ME about veganism. More specifically, they couldn’t wait to talk to me about Alexandra Jamieson and her veganism no-more… Today, I am finally ready to steam down and talk about what bugged me – and the crux of it is something I think needs to change in the vegan movement: our quickness to judge others and to react harshly — especially anonymously, online.

My Father is Not Vegan (and how he makes me a better one)

I have been told multiple times that I need to have a Twitter account just for the things that come out of my father’s mouth. Although I think the vegans and vegetarians would appreciate it the most.

One of the most recent gems was when we went for dinner and he said to our waitress “My daughter is a vegan….sorry.”

Feature Interview: An 11-year-old vegan baker

Christopher is 11 years old – almost 12, and just recently he has discovered a love for baking. He has been vegetarian since he was born – and vegan for the past couple of years. A few months ago he started baking up a storm – and it’s been pretty much constant since then. Whether he’ll decide to pursue vegan baking as a career is uncertain – but one this IS certain – anyone who gets to go to dinner at his house is pretty lucky!

My Veg Story: A Lifestyle Change to Live With

Like many of us, I was raised on a diet of hot dogs, Frosted Mini-Wheats, and Happy Meals. Every large family gathering warranted a giant pot of cheese-covered Cincinnati Chili; life milestones were celebrated with eight pounds of steak tips and a trip to the local Dairy Queen. No summer night was complete without a chocolate ice cream concoction. Basically, it was meat, dairy, cheese, oh my! And I loved it all – every last processed bite of it

I Am Someone…Sheep [infographic]

Every creature on planet Earth should be allowed to live in peace for his/her own sake. Sheep are
individuals with feelings and thoughts, and should have the right to exist without being harmed,
to be who they are. Share this infographic to spread awareness of the fact that each sheep,
each lamb is SOMEONE. Visit www.veganmainstream.com/veganblogs for more info

Veganville’s Virility Takes Veganism to Mainstream America

Talk about vegan going mainstream! How much more American mainstream does it get than Saturday Night Live? This past weekend we were DELIGHTED to see Justin Timberlake don a block of tofu and send out a far-reaching plug for veganism as part of his “ville” series – this one being Veganville

Is it Cool to Teach Veganism to Other People’s Kids?

Teaching, as cliché as it may sound, is one of the most rewarding careers in existence. I speak of this from personal experience; I have been educating spunky little people for more than eight years and have been working with them in various other settings for 15 years! All the while, I’ve been pursuing another of my passions – cruelty-free living. To me, the phrase “cruelty-free” encompasses an entire animal-conscious approach to life, including veganism and the like.

Are Vegan Children Smarter?

I had a discussion with a friend recently where I told him that I thought I remembered reading a study that vegan and vegetarian kids perform better in school. He countered that it was a moot point because these kids were being raised by vegetarian or vegan parents who likely had higher IQs. His point was that vegans and vegetarians take more time to be educated about what they are putting in their bodies compared to the average Joe/Josephine and therefore their children would likely be more intelligent than their counterparts.

Ultimately neither of us really had any idea what we were talking about, but I was intrigued to get to the bottom of it, and so I did some research. And what I found out?

The Impact of Thinking YES (and a recipe for Steel Cut Oats with Mushrooms and Walnuts – YUM!)

It’s not news that adopting a plant-based style of eating offers a bevy of health rewards. Plant-based eaters generally have reduced cardiovascular risk, lower body mass index, and lower total mortality. But, plant-based eating is not just good for you, it’s also good for Mother Earth

Vegan Awakenings

When someone becomes vegan their whole life begins to change. For most people the first change is just the first of many. One of my favorite things in the world is to watch the “awakening” process that new vegans go through, and their personal transformations that come about as a result. I have a story, case in point
