With the wide variety of information and entertainment that we have access to through the Internet, blogging may arguably be described as the new “reality television”. As a long-time blogger, it’s been my pleasure to compile a list of my favorite vegan blogs. Here are several of the blogs and writers I most admire:

1. Abolitionist Approach- Gary Francione could very well be described as the unofficial leader of the true animal rights movement. His blog, the Abolitionist Approach, addresses topics from the fallacies of single-issue campaigns to the problems with sexism in the vegan community. Very interesting stuff.

2. The Discerning Brute- Joshua Katcher, the author of The Discerning Brute, gives us a male perspective on the softer side of veganism. His blog touches on the subjects of eco-friendly vegan clothing, hygiene products and keeps readers “up to date on environmentally, ethically, and socially responsible news and indulgences.”

3. Vegan Yum Yum- Lolo, the magnificent writer for Vegan Yum Yum, posts actual recipes for the food she creates! (One of my biggest pet peeves are the sites with pictures of delicious food and no instructions on their re-creation) The blog has recipes for tons of vegan treats; everything from Cucumber tea sandwiches to Ice cream cone cupcakes. Hard one to miss if you’re at all into beautiful photos of actual food.

4. Vegan World Trekker- Maria’s blog, the Vegan World Trekker is not just a travel blog, it’s a great advice blog for vegans everywhere. On it, you’ll find everything from tips for eating at the beach to a guide on how to travel as a single vegan chick. It’s a world away from your every-day vegan blog.

5. Green is the New Red- Will Potter is the creator of this weblog dedicated to the fight against the “green scare,” a term describing the labeling of activists as “eco-terrorists.” I suggest every vegan set aside some time to do some history on the green scare. This blog is a great place to start!

6. Vegan Lunch Box- Jennifer McCann is a real vegan mom dedicated to healthy eating and living. Her blog, Vegan Lunch Box, features tons of easy-to-make dishes that are not only kid friendly, but delicious to admire. Do you have your lap-top lunch box yet?

7. Circle our earth- Cristen, the creator of Circle our Earth is a world traveler from Austin, Texas. Her blog features travel diaries, tips for eating vegan around the world and tons of photos from all over the globe. Learn how to eat vegan everywhere from Vietnam to Iceland.

8. Urban Housewife- Melisser Elliott, the Urban Housewife, is a traveling vegan blogger from San Francisco and owner of Sugar Beats Sweets. She’s also an up-and-coming author, with a book that is soon to be published. Her blog is updated quite often, so it’s always a treat to check it out.

9. Girlie Girl Army- In the mood for cute vegan shoe porn? Girlie Girl Army is the answer to all a vegan girl’s dreams. Their blog features new products, fashions and even a recipe of the week. Plenty of great content to check out!

10. Leafy Green- Finally, Leafy Green is a great site to check out for all the information you’ll ever need on products for eco-friendly and vegan living. Not everything on the website is vegan, but the things that aren’t are easy to pick out. It’s a good resource for people who have allergies or don’t use harsh chemicals in their homes.

The vegetarian/vegan movement would not be as resilient as it is today without the efforts of organizations that have been pushing their common agenda of protecting the environment, helping people make informed and healthy choices, and stopping cruelty to animals. “It’s almost as good as the real thing,” I say, chewing thoughtfully, a serious look on my face. My girlfriend, Kristin, puts down her slice of the day—local organic broccoli, roasted garlic and tomato—and gives me an “I can’t believe you just said that out loud” look.
